Each Pacific carving holds a tribal spiritual meaning. The fish hook is a traditional Maori design symbolising strength, courage, determination, prosperity and abundance. The fish hook also acts as a good luck amulet or talisman and protector of those traveling, especially over water and is often worn by travelers on their journey.
Much of Maori traditional food is from the sea. The Maori developed such a deep respect for the ocean as a provider and the ownership of a fish hook acknowledged this respect and bought prosperity. On long fishing trips, the Maori wore the Hei-Matau as a protector. Prosperity is bestowed upon those who give and those who receive the Hei-Matau.
Each piece is individually handcrafted. As jade is a natural material there will be slight variations in colour bewteen each carving. Beautifully presented with traditional tribal meaning included.
A suitable necklace for a man or woman.
