Polynesian Pendants are important ancient symbols with a number of legends regarding their meaning. The styles include the popular Tiki design, which is sacred to New Zealand Maori people and represents the first man and the strong links with the sea. The Koru style (seen above) is a stylish circular design which represents virtues of peace, tranquility, and a strong sense of regrowth and new beginnings. The Hei Matau, or fish hook, is another traditional design indicating good luck, strength, prosperity, and abundance in the wearer. These pieces of mens jewelry were once for practical purposes in fishing. Finally, the beautifully intricate Manaia designs are thought to carry great spiritual significance and are regarded as guardians against evil, to defend the wearer from bad spiritual energy at all times.
The polynesian pendant is not only a form of highly wearable polynesian art, but also an important historical artifact, and Polynesian bone carving pendants based on Maori designs, are of great value as Polynesian and New Zealand Maori had no written language, therefore tribal history and the stories of the gods were kept using fine arts and crafts, from basket and cloth-weaving to detailed carvings in bone, shell and greenstone.
A Polynesian pendant carving worn with respect or given/received with love is said to take on much of the spirit of whoever wears or handles the pendant, and therefore can become a spiritual link between people spanning time and great distance. A pendant carving that has been worn by family or polynesian tribal members over many generations contains the spirit of all of those people and is truly a powerful and great treasure.
A Polynesian pendant is notable for having a very special feel about the pendant, unlike anything else you will ever experience. With a milky white appearance and soft flowing lines, they feel soft and warm to the touch, yet the finish is like polished glass. They seem to blend with your body and become a part of you, especially when the pendant is worn against the skin. Over time, polynesian pendants absorb oils from your skin and change colour to a very light honey gold. Many Polynesians believe this to be the pendant taking on some of your spirituality or essence, and thus truly becoming a part of the wearer.
Every Polynesian Pendant purchased through NZ Pacific is presented with a braided or platted waxed braid cord, along with native flax bag woven to show the traditional styling and beauty of the carving.
Also supplied is an attractive information sheet telling the meaning of that Polynesian Pendant.
