The Polynesian Tiki pendant is regarded as a good luck charm when worn, and in some Polynesian areas is also regarded as a fertility symbol. Polynesian Tiki pendants are frequently called 'Hei Tiki '. 'Hei' means to wear the pendant around ones neck. As an ancient symbol, little is understood about their meaning and there are a number of Polynesian myths about the origins of the Tiki. Many say the Tiki came from the stars, and that he was the first man of the world. Tiki are depicted with webbed feet which suggests a strong link to the sea creatures of Polynesia. The Polynesian tiki was respected as the teacher of all things, so the wearer of this symbol is seen to possess a clarity of thought as well as loyalty, great inner knowledge and strength of character.
As early Polynesians had no written language, tribal history and the stories of the gods were kept intact by using many forms of arts and crafts such as complex bone, shell and greenstone carving. These art treasures were then handed down through generations of tribal elders and became sacred objects or treasures, to tell tribal history and take on the spirits of past great leaders and warriors who had worn the Tikis.
Many believe that a Polynesian Hei Tiki pendant worn or given with respect or love will take on the spirit of the person who wears or handles it, becoming a spiritual link between people spanning time and distance. Polynesian Tiki carvings that have been worn by family or tribal members over many generations contains the spirit of all of those people and are truly great and powerful treasures.
Each Polynesian Tiki purchased through NZ Pacific is presented with a braided or platted waxed braid cord, along with woven native flax bag designed to show the traditional styling and beauty of the Tiki.
