Polynesian Jewellery is an important ancient craft. A number of Polynesian Jewellery styles are popular, including the iconic Tiki design, which is sacred to many Polynesian people and represents the first man and the continuing strong links with the sea. The Koru style (as seen above) is a circular jewllery design which represents virtues of peace, tranquility, and a strong sense of regrowth & new beginnings. The Hei Matau, (fish hook) is another traditional design indicating good luck, strength, prosperity, and abundance in the person who wears it.. These pieces of Polynesian jewellery were once for practical fishing purposes. Finally, the Manaia designs are regarded as carrying great spiritual significance and are often sees as guardians against evil, to defend the wearer from bad spiritual energy at all times.
Of course polynesian jewellery is not only a form of highly wearable polynesian art, but also an important historical artifact as Polynesian populations had no written language, therefore tribal history and the stories of the gods were kept using fine arts and crafts, from basket and cloth-weaving to detailed carvings in bone, shell and greenstone.
A piece of Polynesian jewellery worn with respect or given/received with love in the heart is said to take on much of the spirit of the person wears or handles the jewllery, and therefore can become a spiritual link between people spanning time and great distance. A jewellery carving that has been worn by family or polynesian tribal members over many generations contains the spirit of all of those people and is truly a powerful and great treasure.
Polynesian jewellery is notable for having a very special feel about it, unlike anything else ever experienced. The bone jewellery has a milky white appearance and soft flowing lines, they feel soft and warm to the touch, yet the finish is like polished glass. They seem to blend with your body and become a part of you, especially when the jewellery is worn against the skin. Over time, polynesian jewellery absorbs oils from your skin and changes colour to a very light honey gold. Many Polynesians believe this to be the pendant taking on some of your spirituality or essence, and thus truly becoming a part of the wearer. Of course, NZpacific.com also includes a number of designs in bone, greenstone, and shell.
Every unique item of Polynesian Jewellery purchased through NZ Pacific is presented with a braided or platted waxed braid cord, along with native flax bag woven to show the traditional styling and beauty of the jewellery.
Also supplied is an attractive information sheet telling the meaning of that Polynesian Jewellery.
