As early Maori populations did not have a written language, the tribal history and the myths of Gods were kept by the many forms of fine arts and crafts such as bone, shell and jade or limited edition greenstone carving. Bone pendants were handed down across many generations of tribal elders and eventually became sacred objects, which could tell the history of a tribe and take the spirits of past great leaders and warriors who had worn the bone pendants.
Pendants and jewellery made from bone developed into a fine art form with great importance being placed on the quality of every pendant, many of which took years to make using stone tools.
