Because early Maori had no written language, there was a great deal of ancestral tribal history and stories of the Gods remained alive by using the many forms of fine art and crafts, such as Maori Bone Jewellery. Beautiful treasured artifacts were often handed down through generations of Maori tribal elders, and the jewellery later became Taonga, meaning sacred objects or treasures, which could tell the history of a tribe and take on spirits of past great warriors and leaders who had worn the Maori bone jewellery.
Maori Bone Jewellery, when worn with respect or given and received with love, takes on part of the spirits of those persons who wear or handle the jewellery, to become a spiritual link between people spanning time and distance. Bone jewellery carvings that have been worn by family or Maori tribal members over many generations contain the spirit of all of those people and is truly a great and powerful treasure.
A variety of Maori Bone Jewellery styles and designs remain popular, including the Tiki design, one which is sacred to Maori people of New Zealand, and represents the first man and humanity's strong links with the sea. The Koru style - as seen above - is a circular design which represents peace and tranquility, as well as a strong sense of regrowth and new beginnings. Hei Matau (fish hooks) are another traditional design indicating good luck, strength, prosperity, and abundance in the jewellery wearer. These pieces of maori bone jewellery were once also used for practical purposes in fishing. Finally, the intricate and powerful Manaia is thought to carry great spiritual significance and is regarded as a guardian against evil, to defend the wearer from bad spiritual energy at all times.
Every piece of Maori Bone Jewellery purchased through NZ Pacific is presented with a braided or platted waxed braid cord, along with woven native flax bag designed to show the traditional beauty and styling of the jewellery. All these hand made items are unique and 'one-off', so no two pieces of Maori Bone Jewellery will ever be exactly alike.
