A hand carved, hand stained, bone carving with a back story we'd like to share with you...

We've named this piece UNFOLDING STORY - a story of war, intrigue, injustice and ultimate redemption.

Hand carved in bone by Yuri Terenyi, this piece is his representation of one of the panels that was illegally exported from New Zealand. A taonga for the Te Āti Awa iwi of Taranaki that rightfully, and inevitably, found its way home.

Here is a brief recap of their journey...

In 1972, five rare Maori wooden panels were discovered in a swamp in New Zealand’s North Island. Shortly after the discovery, the panels were illegally exported out of the country by an antiquities dealer and then bought by Swisscollector George Ortiz. In 1978, the panels were offered for sale by Sotheby’s London. Having traced the panels, the Attorney-General of New Zealand brought an action in the United Kingdom seeking inter alia their repatriation. Following the case’s failure, New Zealand pursued the return of the panels through alternative means. It was only in 2014 – after George Ortiz’s death – that New Zealand obtained the return of the Maori panels by virtue of an agreement with the heirs of Ortiz.
