TŪPUNA - an Ancestor or Grandparent
Beautiful, hand carved 'wheku' pendant. Carved in detail, this is a little work of art - and it looks fantastic worn. The craftsmanship is of the highest standard - zoom in and look closely at the care that has been taken to create this little masterpiece.
This piece is hand carved from deer antler and has pāua shell inlay for the eyes.
The video will reveal the beauty of this piece - it is carved with quite some detail and because we have used deer antler, it has a wonderful variable character.
Wheku, meaning 'carved face', generally depicts the face of an ancestor - TŪPUNA.
The Wheku is often found at the apex of the gable on a Wharenui, the Maori meeting house, and symbolises an important ancestor after whom the house was named.
Today the carved wheku is increasingly seen in other places like pendants and tattoos.
These are all hand-carved pieces, so each is an original. We have bound them with different coloured cords to complement the colours in the individual pieces.
Please use the drop-down menu to select the piece that you would like. Use the cord colour as your guide - thank you!
