'Pekapeka rere ahiahi, hokioi rere po – the bat flies at twilight, the hokioi in the dark of night'.
The pekapeka, or bat, is New Zealand's only native land mammal and is in threat of extinction. They are small - about the size of a hummingbird - fly at night and are important pollinators of some of our bush trees and plants.
Traditionally they are carved in a symmetrical design with a profile of two outward-facing heads sharing one central body. This pendant is carved from a beautiful piece of pounamu - a translucent, milky green with hints of mauve - very unique.
This is a beautiful and visually strong carving called a pekapeka.
The pekapeka is a great pendant to wear for protection when travelling.
