HEAVEN ON EARTH - a very large toki carved in New Zealand Waimea Jade. This jade, or pounamu, is from New Zealand's West Coast - this particular piece of stone is a striking colour - a very pale mint green, milky, mysterious and alluring - an absolute beauty!
The design is quite wonderful - a solid piece of Waimea - large and commanding. The adze is beautifully engraved with traditional moko designs which are subtle but commanding. A gorgeous tactile piece that should be worn.
Moko translated means tattoo - Tā moko is the art of Māori tattoo and is a traditional form of recognising and recording cultural heritage and identity. A moko records and describes an individuals whakapapa - their ancestry and personal history and increasingly are being worn today. They are a wonderful tattoo and carved design with tremendous cultural significance and importance. They have described a wearers social status, their skills and knowledge and in earlier times marriage status. They are beautiful and significant.
We have plaited a cord specifically for HEAVEN ON EARTH. Burnt Gold, Ice White and Khaki colours to pick up and promote the colours in the stone. The binding at the head is Burnt Gold - this is a standout, visually strong piece of carved art.
HEAVEN ON EARTH is a very large Toki - 148mm or 5.8" long.
The Toki's significance...
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.
The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
We have one only, and this piece will be removed from our site when sold. We will also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.
