NEW ARRIVAL
LEGACY SERIES - we have had a limited series of pieces carved with heritage and legacy at their heart. These are pieces that we believe will become a part of a family's history. Carved art to pass through generations building stories that will form a part of your family's history.
KAHURANGI - we have named this toki after the stunning stone it has been hand carved from - a glorious New Zealand Kahurangi jade. KAHURANGI is visually striking, a little ethereal and tactile to hold and wear!
KAHURANGI is beautifully engraved with a traditional moko design in the front face. This design is known as moko. Moko translated means tattoo - Tā moko is the art of Māori tattoo and is a traditional form of recognising and recording cultural heritage and identity. A moko records and describes an individuals whakapapa - their ancestry and personal history and increasingly are being worn today. They are a wonderful tattoo and carved design with tremendous cultural significance and importance. They have described a wearers social status, their skills and knowledge and in earlier times marriage status. They are beautiful and significant.
Hand bound with a four-plait black cord and black binding. We selected a plain cord and binding to not distract from this beautiful piece of Kahurangi Pounamu and the significant design.
KAHURANGI is a wonderful carving, a legacy piece that we believe will find the right family to become a part of, and to record their stories for future generations.
KAHURANGI is a large Toki - 126mm or 4.9" long.
The Meaning of the Toki:
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.
The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
We have one only, and this piece will be removed from our site when sold. We will also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.
