MIDDLE EARTH

MIDDLE EARTH - a gorgeous, large toki.

We are really delighted with this beautiful, large toki with a polished finish. This is a traditional piece carved from a fascinating piece of pounamu. This particular piece of stone is a deep green with paler cloudy swirls through the jade - full of movement and character.

What struck us about this piece of jade was its colour - unusual and beautiful!

We decided to get a little creative with the binding! The cord is our standard adjustable four-plait in khaki green. The lashing on the head of the piece is a gingernut brown which contrasts the colours of the stone - it looks fantastic!

If you like this piece please take a moment to watch the brief video, this reveals the shape and variability in the stone quite clearly.

The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. Traditionally, the adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. It is a symbol of authority.

This shape is derived from a chisel tool used by the Māori people of Aotearoa (New Zealand) to carve their great canoes and carved detailing on their meeting houses. It was an essential tool in their daily lives, and a good quality jade adze was a prized possession.

We will deliver this to you with Express Courier and include our 'Kia Ora' card, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.
