These two WHIMSY matau pendants are hand carved from whale bone. The matau is a traditional shape reflecting the sea-faring traditions of Pacific People. These pieces are a great example of the beauty of this design, particularly when carved in nice tight-grained whalebone - very primal. These are carved from bone recovered from a beached Sperm whale.
We have two of these in a similar design, but with different bindings - please use the dropdown menu to select the piece that you would like. Use the cord colour as a guide.
The hook has long been worn as a decorative piece of jewellery. It is a symbol of prosperity and is believed to protect the wearer when travelling - especially over water.
These are impressive, authentic carvings which will develop further character through wearing.
The Hook: The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
Whale bone is quite porous and will absorb body oils. It will take on a golden colour over time. Local belief would say that the pendant becomes a part of you.
