WHAKAKORŌRIA - to Honour

The Pā Kahawai is a composite trolling lure that was widely used throughout Polynesia to troll for fish. This particular design was specifically made to target the Kahawai - a sea trout common in New Zealand waters. The lure was trailed behind canoes - and was a very successful fishing method.

This taonga is named WHAKAKORŌRIA which means to honour. The fishhook signifies abundance, nourishment and strength. When worn, the matau, or hook, is believed to provide protection - a safe journey over water.

The ocean surrounds New Zealand. On our land, there is a whole lot more water in our freshwater lakes and rivers. Therefore, fishing was very important to Māori. Kai moana (fish and shellfish from the sea) played a very key role in nourishing the people.

WHAKAKORŌRIA is a fabulous wearable representation of the wonderful Pā Kahawai - we commissioned this piece to be worn, but it is equally a lovely carving to display.
