This is a piece of great contrasts. Worn, it is a deep, deep green - almost black - in colour. But hold it up to the light and the magic of this stone is revealed! It transforms into a bright, translucent green colour - this is the magic of Tangiwai.
What a stunner! BURGUNDY BLUSH - a glorious Tangiwai Pounamu Toki.
Tangiwai is an interesting stone. It is rarer than jade and, in New Zealand, is found in Anita Bay - one small area in Piopiotahi, The Milford Sounds. If you've ever travelled down to the South Western corner of New Zealand, that is home to this marvellous stone, you'll appreciate the beauty of this region - and this is a little piece of that magic!
Tangiwai is the most ancient form of pounamu and takes its name from the Māori 'tangi' - to cry and 'wai' - water, 'tears of sorrow'. It is the perfect stone for a drop-shaped pendant.
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.
The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
We have one only, and this piece will be removed from our site when sold. We will also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.
