This is a wonderfully carved piece. Its shape is slender, sensual and made to hold.
We've bound this with our striking Pohutakawa red binding on this piece of Tangiwai pounamu. If you've ever been in the Milford Sounds in the middle of summer you may have seen the Rata blooming - a bright and vibrant red. This piece is our acknowledgement of the beauty of the bush and the splashes of red from these fabulous flowers.
Tangiwai is a rare stone, scarcer than our jade. It comes from a remote area in the Milford Sounds, also called 'Piopiotahi'. This is the most ancient form of pounamu and takes its name from the Māori 'tangi' - to cry and 'wai' - water, so the translation means 'tears of sorrow'.
This pendant is beautifully carved and bound. It is streamlined, gloriously curved and polished to a rich sheen.
Take a look at the video and you will appreciate the simple artistry of this beautiful piece. One of the photos is backlit - check out the wonderful translucency in this stone.
