Holder of spiritual energy, and a guardian against evil. The manaia is believed to be a kind spirit - a guardian that helps people communicate with their ancestors.
The Manaia has many forms as it is intertwined with other shapes and patterns to depict its different powers and its interaction with the spirit and mortal worlds. In this little piece the Manaia has a matau, or hook, tail and a couple of little koru carved into the body - a very decorative piece.
We had our mammoth material carbon dated to get an accurate measure of its age. The testing was done for us by GNS Science, a New Zealand Crown Research Institute and New Zealand's leading provider of Earth, geoscience and isotope research - so their assessment of this material is as accurate as is possible using radiocarbon dating technology.
This is a beautiful Woolly Mammoth Tusk pendant with Pāua eye inlays and will be supplied with an adjustable straw braided cord and will include our 'Kia Ora' card explaining the meaning behind the Manaia design.
