Take a moment to watch the brief video, this reveals the shape and the beautiful colour in the stone quite clearly.

The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. Traditionally, the adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. It is a symbol of authority.

This shape is derived from a chisel tool used by the Māori people of Aotearoa (New Zealand) to carve their great canoes and carved detailing on their meeting houses. It was an essential tool in their daily lives, and a good quality jade adze was a prized possession.
