A fish hook necklace (hei-matau) hand-carved in a traditional style from Woolly Mammoth Tusk. Stunning, very fancy, 'plain' hooks for any occasion!

The tusk we have used for these is honey-coloured, grainy and fabulous - every piece is unique.

The Mammoth Tusk used for this piece is CERTIFIED 34,690 YEARS OLD (+/- 815 years).

We had our mammoth material carbon dated to get an accurate measure of its age. The testing was done for us by GNS Science, a New Zealand Crown Research Institute and New Zealand's leading provider of Earth, geoscience and isotope research - so their assessment of this material is as accurate as is possible using radiocarbon dating technology.

Take a moment to view the video, these pieces have a lovely shape, and a gorgeous grain, all revealed as they rotate.

In New Zealand Maori tradition the fish hook represents prosperity, abundance, strength and determination and is also worn to show a respect for the ocean. Wear this amulet for safety when travelling, particularly over water.

The Hook:  The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.

We have bound these with our adjustable cords. Also included, one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the hook design.

Please use the drop-down menu to select the piece you'd like to receive.

Please note: the pendant shown in the hand and the video are for size reference only.
