Carved in a New Zealand Pounamu the self-described 'AROHA - LOVE' Rueben Tipene design is beautiful! The stone is a soft green Kokopu Jade, prized by carvers for its consistency and unique appearance. The matte finish, and the very subtle engraving have produced a visually gentle piece which is in keeping with the sentiment behind the design.
Rueben has carved a kowhaiwhai pattern in relief into the front face. This particular design represents a mother holding her child.
These designs are generally painted onto ridgepoles of meeting houses and tell the ancestral history of the tribe. Kowhaiwhai are a genealogical record and often are inspired by shapes and forms that are found in nature.
In this case the form is the mother and child beautifully rendered in jade.
Rueben has crafted the pattern in a stippled finish which provides a very subtle contrast when the light catches the matte face of the carving - this is best seen in the video we have made of the piece slowly revolving.
AROHA - LOVE is a beautiful, thoughtful carving, significant in design and size, and with a wonderful sentiment and symbolism.
