MOANA'S LOVE - matau pendant hand carved from whale bone. A beautiful, finely carved piece, light and graceful. This is a wonderful matau - perfect if you'd like something physically small, but visually powerful. A great travelling companion! This is a slender, handcarved whalebone pendant. It is a pale honey colour and the bone has the characteristic pitted look that is typical of whalebone. The cord is a navy blue colour and is length adjustable. The binding on the top of the hook is a bright blue colour.
The matau is a traditional shape reflecting the sea-faring traditions of Pacific People. This piece is a great example of the beauty of this design, particularly when carved in nice tight-grained whalebone - very primal. This is carved from bone recovered from a beached Sperm whale.
The hook has long been worn as a decorative piece of jewellery. It is a symbol of prosperity and is believed to protect the wearer when travelling - especially over water.
MOANA'S LOVE will develop further character through wearing. The bone will absorb body oils and change in colour and texture, becoming golden and smooth.
The Hook: The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
Whale bone is quite porous and will absorb body oils. It will take on a golden colour over time. Local belief would say that the pendant becomes a part of you.
We deliver this pendant on a hand plaited Maui Navy Blue coloured, adjustable cord.
