Hand carved by Kyohei Noguchi - this is a beautiful pendant carved from gorgeous Kawakawa Jade.
This beautiful Matau is crafted with a stylised Huia head creating the loop for the cord. Perched and always ready to take RERE - Flight. This piece looks fantastic from both sides!
To appreciate the design, take a moment to watch the short video. This shows the piece slowly rotating and will give you a clear view of the shape and the colour of the jade.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
We will provide this pendant with a beige plaited cord which is length adjustable.
