STARRY SKY

STARRY SKY - a beautiful polished Tangiwai matau pendant, this stone is the deepest green with the occasional speckle of light that reminds us of the southern night sky.

The matau is believed to offer protection when travelling over water, so they held a significant position as a protector.

Hand carved from Tangiwai Pounamu - it is a very, very deep green - so dark that it appears to be black. This stone comes from one of the most spectacular places in our country, where the bush lines the fjords and the water is a deep green.

A little background on this stone:

Tangiwai is an interesting stone. It is rarer than jade and is found in Anita Bay - one small area in Piopiotahi, The Milford Sounds. If you've ever travelled down to the South Western corner of New Zealand, that is home to this marvellous stone, you'll appreciate the beauty of this region - and this is a little piece of that magic!

Tangiwai is the most ancient form of pounamu and takes its name from the Māori 'tangi' - to cry and 'wai' - water, 'tears of sorrow'. It is the perfect stone for a drop-shaped pendant.

The Hook:  The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
