NAMAZU
Look what is possible when a great artist and skilled carver works his magic on a small boars tusk!
NAMAZU is a fabulous traditional bone carving made for us by Fumio Noguchi. This is a beautifully carved piece - if you watch the brief video we have made of the pendant slowly rotating you will see how he has utilised the shape of the tusk, creating a design specifically for this piece of material.
NAMAZU is a remarkable piece of work and, for us here in New Zealand - and for all others who live on the 'Rim of Fire', a particularly meaningful carving.
This is a Japanese earthquake fish - tradition has it that this is a giant creature that lives under the islands of Japan. It is guarded by the God Takemikazuchi and is restrained under a large stone. From time to time, when the God is distracted NAMAZU thrashes about seeking freedom, causing violent earthquakes.
Fumio has carved a very beautiful and traditional Boars Tusk carving - it can be worn as a pendant but also is a phenomenal little work of art. The design is carved and etched into the bone and Fumio has used a natural stain he makes to highlight certain features. He has signed the back of the carving.
The material used is Boars Tusk with Goat Horn inlay for the eyes, it is extremely tough and will wear very well if you choose to make it a favourite necklace.
Watch the brief video to appreciate the 3-dimensional character of Fumio's carving..
