WHITI - This is a wonderful, finely carved, Aurei (cloak pin) pendant. Carved by Andrew Doughty.

In the artists words below...

Tihē mauriora
Ki te whaiao, ki Te Ao Mārama
The breath, the energy of life
To the dawnlight, to the world of light

This simple Taonga is an Aurei (cloak pin). It is named Whiti meaning to shine. I have endeavoured to maintain a close symmetry with this specific design. The eyes are made of Pāua. This symbolises being able to see the colours of life. It represents the benefit of maintaining a balanced and positive mind. Hence the name of the Taonga, Whiti.

Traditionally these were used to fasten customary Maori cloaks over the shoulder. I really like the simplicity of this design. It has a very light stain to bring out the design work of the Manaia in the centre.

Such items not only served a practical function, they also designated, or expressed, status. Elders would tie a bunch of these together upon their shoulder causing them to jingle and made noise when they stood to speak, thus catching the attention of their audience.

The middle of the Taonga holds a Manaia. The Manaia is a spiritual guardian. They are generally depicted as the profile of a Tiki. This is symbolic of being half in this world and half in the spirit world.

This is a marvellous piece that will certainly draw attention and comment.
