EQUILIBRIUM

A marvellous, organic Manaia that really is all about the beautiful stone - a visually striking piece carved from jade with a mix of gorgeous, subtle colours.

EQUILIBRIUM was carved for us by Ross Crump and is a large piece. He predominantly carves freeform pieces and is a master at utilising the natural beauty in any given piece of New Zealand jade. This is a great example of carving to the stone - extracting a form that complements the natural variation in the jade.

A large, hand carved manaia pendant - with a wonderful koru heart.

There are two major design elements in this piece: 

The Manaia: a mythical being believed to be the invisible light, or aura, surrounding a person. They represent spiritual power and are believed to be the guide that leads the spirits to heaven. They are worn to guide and protect.

The Koru: the Māori word for 'loop'. The spiral shaped koru design represents an unfolding silver fern frond. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to ‘going back to the beginning’.  The unfurling frond itself is symbolic of new life, new beginnings, hope and rebirth.
