WHIMSY - playfully quaint, or fanciful...
WHIMSY, the perfect name for this beautiful matau pendant. Hand carved from whale bone this is indeed a piece that will delight and inspire. A pendant to accompany you on all your adventures!
The matau is a traditional shape reflecting the sea-faring traditions of Pacific People. This piece is a great example of the beauty of this design, particularly when carved in nice tight-grained whalebone - very primal. This is carved from bone recovered from a beached Sperm whale.
The hook has long been worn as a decorative piece of jewellery. It is a symbol of prosperity and is believed to protect the wearer when travelling - especially over water.
WHIMSY is an impressive, authentic traditional carving which will develop further character through wearing.
The Hook: The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
Whale bone is quite porous and will absorb body oils. It will take on a golden colour over time. Local belief would say that the pendant becomes a part of you.
We deliver this pendant on a hand plaited Manuka Green/Kalahari coloured, adjustable cord.
Also provided, our 'Kia Ora Cards' explaining the meaning behind the hook design.
