WHAKARAWE - to provide

The Pā Kahawai is a composite trolling lure that was widely used throughout Polynesia to troll for fish. This particular design was specifically made to target the Kahawai - a sea trout common in New Zealand waters. The lure was trailed behind canoes - and was a very successful fishing method.

This taonga is named WHAKARAWE which means to provide. The fishhook signifies abundance, nourishment and strength. When worn, the matau, or hook, is believed to provide protection - a safe journey over water. Most importantly, the fishhook was a key tool in providing food for the community.

This fishing lure is a made from heart Rimu Wood, Bone and Pāua Shell.

The ocean surrounds New Zealand. On our land, there is a whole lot more water in our freshwater lakes and rivers. Therefore, fishing was very important to Māori. Kai moana (fish and shellfish from the sea) played a very key role in nourishing the people.

WHAKARAWE was carved for us by Andrew Doughty. It is a wonderful homage to the Pā Kahawai - this piece is made to wear and is a fabulous piece of art!
