Mythically, these carvings offer protection to the people who wear them. They contain great spiritual energy and help guard against evil. Typically they will be gifted, and worn, to offer protection and luck, often when people are traveling or facing challenging situations.

The Dolphin and Whale are two mammals of the ocean that Maori believe offer protection. They are admired for their speed, sensitivity and strength and their willingness to protect other sea creatures and humans when they're in distress.

The Manaia is also regarded as a protective spirit. It is regarded as a guardian angel and is worn to provide protection.
