THE FORTUNE TELLER - seek your fortune within and live a prosperous life
A beautiful New Zealand Marsden Pounamu Tiki pendant hand carved by Kyohei Noguchi.
This is a large and a significant piece. It has been handcarved from New Zealand Marsden jade - a beautiful deep green stone with the occasional colour variation that is typical of this stone.
Kyohei developed his carving skill under the tutelage of Ric Moor, specifically in jade, and in our view is someone to watch! This tiki is an exceptional example of this particular design. He has chosen a lovely piece of jade and produced a skilfully carved, balanced design. The word 'harmonious' comes to mind when you hold this piece. It has subtle beautiful curves and is polished to a wonderful, soft sheen.
THE FORTUNE TELLER is as good a tiki any we've seen - a very traditional design carved beautifully. This is a collectable carving and we think will be a valuable piece worthy of any collectors selection.
THE FORTUNE TELLER is wearable, but equally would make a stunning display piece.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE TIKI:
The tiki is a well recognised symbol in Maori culture, but also has historical roots in Hawaiian and wider Polynesian cultures. It is believed to symbolise fertility, and was often worn by women as a fertilising symbol. Its form is believed to represent a human embryo, often carved with the hands placed on the loins in what is believed to be a direct reference to fertility.
Notable in this piece is the design of the mouth and tongue. Kyohei has carved a split tongue, which . I have a book which refers to this particular design feature which has been seen in some very old tiki.
These pendants were traditionally highly valued and wearers were seen to possess clarity of thought, loyalty, great inner knowledge and strength of character.
