This is one of two collectable pieces we have from Donn. We are thrilled to share these incredible, hand carved creations with you!
This sculpture is hand carved from New Zealand Marsden Jade. It is supplied with a cord so that it can be worn, as well as a brass stand handmade by Donn, so that it can be displayed. WHORL is a sculptural work of art from one of the best jade artists around - a collectable piece of jewellery, or a piece to display.
WHORL is an artwork that displays all the hallmarks of Donn's work - a beautiful design and flawless craftsmanship. It is a seed pod which has just sent up its first little tendril - this has been carved with delicacy and skill. It exits the pod and returns to wind around the body with a gentle, subtle embrace - a symbol of the fragility of a new life.
Particularly striking is the contrast between this fine organic form and repeating patterns often seen in nature. In this piece, Donn has marked the seed pod with regular concentric circles polished into the jade - form and order that is distinct from the meandering tendril. It requires a rare skill to achieve such fine, organic shapes in jade.
