A bold and beautifully carved manaia koru...
This manaia incorporates the head of a bird and a koru centre and tail - linking the sky, land and sea. These are important symbols down here in the South Pacific.
Yuri has carved these from natural cow bone.
If you like the photos, take a moment to watch the short video. You will gain an appreciation of the pendant shape and the grain and colour of the bone.
The Manaia: a mythical being believed to be the invisible light, or aura, surrounding a person. They represent spiritual power and are believed to be the guide that leads the spirits to heaven. They are worn to guide and protect.
The Koru: the Māori word for 'loop'. The spiral shaped koru design represents an unfolding silver fern frond. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to ‘going back to the beginning’. The unfurling frond itself is symbolic of new life, new beginnings, hope and rebirth.
Also included; our Kia Ora cards, which give a little meaning behind the Manaia and Koru designs.
