NIHO - This beautiful pendant exhibits the continuing progression of carvers developing and building on traditional shapes. This is a contemporary pendant with its roots tied to the rei-puta design. It is a large and visually striking piece with detail that sheets back to New Zealand design often seen in other carved pieces - the koru, and perhaps the whale-tail.
Rei-puta were believed to have been carved as a way to pass information down through the generations. The specific design contained familial information and was a way to preserve and relate this to following generations. Certainly when gifted within a family the stories associated with the piece were related along with the gift, and this kept history alive.
It is a decorative piece which is in keeping with the early use of this shape as an ornamental pendant - commonly worn by men and women. These shapes were worn by Māori who met James Cook when he first visited New Zealand in the late 18th century.
