WHAKATERE
In stock
WHAKATERE - to steer or navigate... a word that also means to speed things up, to hustle. For us this piece signifies - know where you're going, how to get there and to move fast!
A beautiful medium sized toki, carved in a jade type that we rarely see - AUHUNGA. This is a jade that sits somewhere between the very pale Inanga and the darker Kawakawa jade. A beautiful stone, and when in the hands of a carver like Ross Crump, gorgeous carved art is the result!
We've bound this Toki with a bright and beautiful paradise blue braided cord. The necklace is hand plaited from our Sunrise and Paradise Blue cords. Its length is adjustable. We felt if nature can produce such glorious colours in the stone, we can do our best with the cord too!
This is definitely a unisex piece - anyone can wear this and it will be perfect!
The photos and the video reveal the colours a whole lot better than our written description, so take a moment to view these.
WHY WOULD YOU WEAR A TOKI?
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.
The jade used to carve this stunning Toki came from the West Coast on New Zealand's South Island, from the Marsden valley. It was created in the alpine fault and shaped and given further character in our alpine rivers.
The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
We also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.
