This is a significant carving - a visually stunning pendant carved from a beautiful piece of New Zealand Auhunga Jade.
Auhunga is a jade that sits between the pale milky green Inanga and the brighter darker green Kawakawa - it is the stone that provides a bridge between the two, and this produces these wonderful colour mixes!
WHIORAU is a wonderful exemplar of the hook - the matau. Beautifully carved with fine detail and in a manner that does not distract from the beauty of the stone.
The Hei-Matau is a powerful symbol representing prosperity, abundance and fertility. It is also believed to provide good luck and safety when travelling over water.
