TIAKI - Protect

Carved from New Zealand Argillite by Rueben Tipene

TIAKI is a small and solid Toki carved in New Zealand argillite, or 'pakohe'. The slate grey stone and subtle design combine to produce a wonderful traditional piece with a contemporary edge. The koru etched into the front face are captured when the light plays across the stone, and the finish is a polished satin matte.

We have given this a plain black neck cord with a black floret - the overall impression is really lovely - this is a piece that can be worn with any outfit.

This is a beautifully designed, carved and finished piece of art!

We have made a video which slows this piece slowly revolving. Take a moment to watch this, it reveals the beautiful design and the precise carving.

Traditionally, the toki is worn to provide strength and courage to assist through life's challenges.

The Koru: the Māori word for 'loop'. The spiral shaped koru design represents an unfolding silver fern frond. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to ‘going back to the beginning’.  The unfurling frond itself is symbolic of new life, new beginnings, hope and rebirth.

We include our 'Kia Ora' card explaining the meaning behind the Toki and koru design.
