HEAR ME SING - a hand carved traditional Māori Flute.
HEAR ME SING is a work of art - beautifully stained with a tea-based dye and decorated with a traditional tiki design on the back.
This Māori flute is called a Kōauau. These are carved tubes, traditionally made from bone or wood, and open at both ends. They are usually somewhere between 10 and 20cm long (4 - 8 inches) and have between three and six finger holes drilled through the bore - this one has three holes. To play, air is blown across the open end setting up a swirling of the air in the tube producing a soft, haunting sound.
This is the most common of the traditional flutes of the Māori and is attributed to the goddess of flute music, Hineraukatauri.
HEAR ME SING is fully functioning and can be played (if you know how). Equally it is a beautiful piece of traditional art.
We have taken a short video of this piece rotating so please take a look to view the beauty of this piece in 3D.
