We have carved these in deer antler. The material varies a little in grain and colour from piece to piece. The design of each piece is the same, but because they are all handcarved they all vary just a little - every one is an original!
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
We provide these hook pendants on adjustable cords and will also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the hook design.
