WHEKU - a large WHEKU sculpture
Ancestral Visage in Pounamu
This commanding sculptural piece is a large scale rendering of the traditional wheku form, hewn from dark green pounamu. The stylised ancestral face, with its powerful, linear features, is executed with formidable precision.
As a cornerstone of Māori carving, the wheku embodies an ancestral presence. This taonga serves as a permanent symbol of inherited wisdom, strength, and a direct connection to one's tīpuna.
Its substantial mass and austere expression give it a potent focal point for protection and guidance. This is a significant work, intended for those who value a profound link to heritage and the enduring power of ancestral symbolism.
