The design is a very traditional mask design used in Japanese Noh theatre. This particular design is thought to represent a figure that is tormented and demonic, but also sorrowful. The art of this play is the subtle movement of the mask which changes its look - front on it appears angry and is frightening, if it is tilted down the face appears sad and tormented. These are a fantastic, traditional carved design with a lot of history and meaning.
This has been beautifully carved by Fumio Noguchi - a memorable little work of art!
