MANAWANUI - Steadfast

Hand carved Whale Bone Manaia Pendant by Andrew Doughty.

MANAWANUI is a significant carving, executed in whalebone recovered from a whale that stranded on the East coast of the South Island near Kaikōura, New Zealand.

In the words of the artist:

This Manaia Hook is named Manawanui which means Steadfast. The name is in connection with the strength of the whale bone and its persevering qualities.

This style of hook can be traced back to the Māori mythological origins of New Zealand where it is described that the demigod Maui 'fished' up the North Island of New Zealand (which is shaped like a stingray) with the jawbone of his grandmother, Murirangawhenua.

The fishhook signifies abundance, nourishment, and strength. As such it represents peace, prosperity, and good health. A fishhook is also a symbol that represents safe journey over water. Hence it is loved by travellers.

This Manaia Hook has an inlay of Pāua for the eyes. The koru running up the neck of this carving represent the arising of our happiness.

The koru symbol is common in New Zealand and is inspired by the unfurling of the new fern fronds. Meanings associated with this are new growth, new beginnings and awakening.

It depicts a manaia - a mythical being that lives half in this world and half in the world of the spirits.

The manaia’s eyes are set with pāua shell, adding a piercing stare. Every element of the composition is thoughtfully connected, with no aspect overlooked or understated. The result is a flawlessly executed taonga, serious in tone and unmistakably the work of a carver operating at the peak of their craft.
