PATH OF LIFE HERU is a remarkable work of art - beautifully designed and faultlessly carved.
This is a piece to use! It is a fully functional hair comb (heru) and can be worn as your favourite comb, or displayed as a beautiful piece of contemporary art.
Hand made in New Zealand by Tonijae Brockway.
THE HERU - heru are an ornamental comb that were traditionally worn by māori men to secure hair tied into a topknot. The topknots were decorated with feathers and held together with the heru, which also served to indicate the rank of the wearer. Traditionally they were carved from wood, or from whalebone. We have attached a photo of a lithograph (courtesy of the Alexander Turnbull library) showing a traditional heru worn.
PATH OF LIFE HERU is a large comb carved from a gorgeous, single piece of Bone.
This is a very tactile piece. It is beautiful to hold with a silky smooth finish. Tonijae has perfectly executed this gorgeous work of art. The finish accentuates the depth of the bone, and his stain provides a fantastic contrast, allowing the variation in colours to emerge.
PATH OF LIFE HERU - a remarkable carving and a very bold piece of tradition.
We suggest you take a look at the video to appreciate the artistry of this exquisite piece.
We can also provide this on a plaited and adjustable cord if you would like to wear it as a large pendant - very striking!
