TĀWHIWHI - Entwined

In the artists words...

This Manaia is named Tāwhiwhi meaning entwined. There are three Manaia which are intricately connected. The Manaia, (or messenger), is the profile of a Tiki. This is symbolic of being half in this world and half in the spirit world. Manaia can be adapted with other symbols and stylized to communicate different meanings.

The three Manaia all flow from the same body. This is symbolic of whanau (family) and ancestral blood lines. Therefore, they represent the family unit. At another level it also symbolises the harmony of spirit, mind and body. This shows that we are psychosomatic unities, or entwined beings. What I mean by this is that together they create the unique person that you are.

The body is covered by a river of rising koru. The koru symbol is common in New Zealand and is inspired by the unfurling of new fern fronds. Meanings associated with this are new growth, new beginnings and awakening. The eyes are inlays of pāua. This is symbolic of being able to view what is precious in our life. This represents the arising of wisdom within our heart and mind.

The paua inlay at the top of the design is symbolic of our need to rest in the strength of the Great Creator. Near the base is a small pounamu patu. This represents the weapon of love. The foundation upon which spiritual life is built. There is a small inlay of pounamu to the side of this which is in front of a flowing koru which can be seen on the back of the carving. This is the seed of potential within our life waiting to be watered and nourished.

An outstanding example of carved art by Andrew Doughty. This is a very complex piece, carved using a mix of materials - bone, cold-water pāua and pounamu (jade).

TĀWHIWHI - is a unique carving, in a style immediately recognisable as Andrew Doughty's. He pays inordinate attention to detail and highlights particular areas of the piece with partial staining. Andrew also uses a mix of materials, each with a specific purpose - in this case he has added Pāua Shell eyes, Jade and Pāua inserts on the top, bottom, front and back of the piece and a slice of Pounamu representing a symbolic patu.
