In the artists words below, a description of his thinking behind this gorgeous design...

This carving is named te Haerenga ki te kainga which means the journey home. The
foundation of the carving is based on the koru and upon ocean currents as
symbolised by the kowhaiwhai pattern.

Located at the base is the main koru. This symbol is common in New Zealand and is
inspired by the unfurling of the new fern fronds. Meanings associated with this are
new life, growth, new beginnings and spiritual awakening. In this case it is the
beginning of a journey.

In this case, the journey is one that will ultimately lead us homeward. Whether it
be a new home, or an ancestral home, or both, home is where the heart is.

The kowhaiwhai pattern on the front represents the great ocean of life with all its
twists and turns. However, with love and wisdom, they ultimately flow upwards.
We are continually learning and experiencing the various seasons of life. The good,
bad and indifferent. Therefore, this pattern represents a gentle unfolding of our
life.

On the back there is an inlay of pāua. As it is hidden on the back, this emphasises
the internal nature of growth. This is harder to see from the outside. However, it
is a true beauty to behold. This beauty ignites the flame of love which is
represented by the pattern above it.
