BONE MANAIA

In stock

Hand carved for us by Andrew Doughty. This is classic bone art - beautifully handcrafted, thoughtful bone carvings. Every one is a little masterpiece!

These beautiful manaia are carved from natural stained bone with eyes inlaid in Pāua Shell - inside the Pāua is an inlay of brass. The brass represents seeing and enjoying the abundance of life.

We have ten of these custom pieces. Each one hand carved and named by the artist. We will not repeat these pieces.

We've paired this lovely manaia with a Dark Brown adjustable cord and Brown popper. We wanted to create a piece of jewellery that will draw the eye and request attention. This piece is perfect for you if you like handcrafted, traditional art to wear, and if you appreciate the finest craftsmanship.

The artist has decorated these pieces with particular carved detail - these have meaning for the design beyond that associated with this style Matau.

KORU running along the inside and up the neck of the manaia - these represent the flow and rising of our happiness.

There is also a pattern that runs along the mouth of the manaia. This symbolises the breath, the giver of life. It also represents a calmness of mind. Through managed, controlled breathing clarity of mind and inner peace can be increased.

Each piece is handcarved and named - select the piece that you would like with the drop-down menu:

  • EKE PANUKU - successfully overcome
  • KĀINGA TUPU - ancestral home, homeland
  • EKE TANGAROA - triumph
  • NONINGA KUMU - home
  • WHAKAKĀINGA - to make a home
  • MĀNGARINGARI - luck
  • WAIMARIA - good fortune
  • ANGITU - be successful
  • TŪĀ PĀ - to clear the way
  • MĀNGARI - to be fortunate

There is plenty of detail in these carvings - the body is decorated with carvings on the front and back a koru - softening the detail of the carved head. The carving culminates in a hook shape establishing a connection between the ocean and the land - perfect for a piece that comes from New Zealand, an island nation.

The Manaia: a mythical being believed to be the invisible light, or aura, surrounding a person. They represent spiritual power and are believed to be the guide that leads the spirits to heaven. They are worn to guide and protect.

The Hook:  The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.

This pendant will be delivered to you with DHL Express Courier on a hand plaited adjustable cord. We will also include our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Manaia and Hook design.
