TARANAKI PANEL - TWO
ARTIST: YURI TERENYI
This is an intricately carved piece, which replicates a very old panel carving from the Taranaki, in New Zealand. This particular piece is based on a pre-European carved panel which was a freestanding piece. The original is a very interesting piece - it is a very old design and there is nothing like it in later art. Furthermore its original purpose is unclear, but it is likely that it documents the history of the tribe.
This record of ancestry provides the layers of history that are the foundation of a tribes' whakapapa, its genealogy, so the original panels are taonga and very important to the Iwi they belong to.
Full sized panels were carved from wood using stone and bone chisels and could be beautifully intricate in design. This one is carved from bone and stained with a tea dye that Yuri makes specifically for these pieces. Over time, and with wear, the colour of this piece will alter and improve - they seem to take on a look that is unique to the wearer depending on what they are subjected to.
We have bound this PANEL with a hand-plaited Wapiti Brown and Gingernut cord which is length adjustable.
Delivered to you on our combo cord of Wapiti Brown and Gingernut which is length adjustable. We will ship this with Express Courier.
We will also include our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the twist and Manaia design.
