WHAKAWHIWHI - to award, present, to give or endow
The Pā Kahawai is a composite trolling lure that was widely used throughout Polynesia to troll for fish. This particular design was specifically made to target the Kahawai - a sea trout common in New Zealand waters. The lure was trailed behind canoes - and was a very successful fishing method.
This taonga is named WHAKAWHIWHI meaning to award, present, to give or endow. The fishhook in Polynesian cultures signifies abundance, nourishment and strength. When worn, the matau, or hook, is believed to provide protection - a safe journey over water.
This fishing lure contains a pāua shell inlay in some heart rimu wood and with a barb made from bone. These were a very effective lure - the shimmering pāua shell attracting the local Kahawai when trailed behind a canoe.
The ocean surrounds New Zealand. On our land, there is a whole lot more water in our freshwater lakes and rivers. Therefore, fishing was very important to Māori. Kai moana (fish and shellfish from the sea) played a very key role in nourishing the people.
WHAKAWHIWHI is a fabulous trifecta of materials brought together to create this wonderful work of Art.
