TAONGA O TE TŪMANAKO - Treasure of Hope
An outstanding example of carved art by Andrew Doughty. This is a very complex piece, carved using a mix of materials - bone, topaz, cold-water pāua and pounamu (jade). It has been carved to reflect hope for positive outcomes when confronting challenges.
The foundation for this design is the manaia - a spiritual guardian with the profile of a Tiki. These represent a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds, and are regarded as bearers of good fortune and providers of spiritual protection.
TAONGA O TE TŪMANAKO - is a unique carving, in a style immediately recognisable as Andrew Doughty's. He pays inordinate attention to detail and highlights particular areas of the piece with partial staining. Andrew also uses a mix of materials, each with a specific purpose - in this case he has added Pāua Shell eyes, Topaz inserts on the top and bottom of the piece and Marsden Pounamu representing a symbolic mere.
Take some time to view the photos, and the brief video we have taken of the piece slowly rotating. It is beautifully carved and quite unique - a real work of art!
