Introducing AUMAKUA’S SHADOW! Crafted from a piece of sperm whale jaw, this is a large and visually powerful piece.

AUMAKUA’S SHADOW is a unique carved pendant from a gorgeous, grainy piece of whalebone. 'Ofa has very cleverly used the texture of the material to make a pendant that really is a 'tale of two sides'. One side a creamy, solid piece of bone - the other, porous, weathered and earthy.

To appreciate its beauty, take a moment to watch the accompanying video — you will be spellbound by its grain and colour.

We have added a burgundy coloured adjustable cord and a woolly mammoth tusk decorative ball at the top of the carving.

The Manaia: a mythical being believed to be the invisible light, or aura, surrounding a person. They represent spiritual power and are believed to be the guide that leads the spirits to heaven. They are worn to guide and protect. 

The Hook:  The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.

Whale bone is quite porous and will absorb body oils. This pendant will darken over time, it will take on a golden brown colour and become more beautiful. Local belief would say that as this happens, the pendant becomes a part of you.
