DOWN-TO-EARTH – tangiwai toki pendant

This is a lovely, medium-sized, symbolic toki. Kerry has etched two hammerhead shark designs into the front face - one descending and one ascending - which lends this piece special meaning.

A hammerhead design toki (pendant) holds special significance due to its rich cultural and spiritual symbolism. The hammerhead shark, or mango, is a powerful symbol of determination, adaptability, and leadership, often associated with guardianship and guidance.

The stone selected is also interesting: a dense, deep green tangiwai pounamu with naturally occurring silver flecks scattered through the stone. The silver flecks are iron minerals included when the stone formed. These natural variations lend the piece a sense of depth and character.

Tangiwai is the most ancient form of pounamu and takes its name from the Māori 'tangi' - to cry and 'wai' - water, 'tears of sorrow'. It is the perfect stone for this marvellous pendant.

The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful ....and this is a good one!

Traditionally, the toki is worn to provide strength and courage to assist through life's challenges.
